Dear Doctor

May 2020

Question:

Opting for non-surgical treatment and staying with hip abductor brace for 7 month old that has mild left DDH, slight shallow socket coverage. Can DDH hip ossify more slowly than a normal hip? Is it possible that it may take some months or even a year for the DDH hip to catch up to normal hip?

Answer:

Yes--a dysplasic hip may ossify more slowly than a normal hip. Asymmetric femoral head ossification is commonly seen in DDH. More information can be found here: https://orthokids.org/Condition/Developmental-Dysplasia-of-the-Hip-(DDH
