Dear Doctor

December 2016

Question:

What are the signs of meniscular tears, and what can be done to care for and prevent them?

- Elira-North Carolina (Patient)

Answer:

Signs of meniscal tears include pain along the knee joint, swelling of the knee and catching or locking of the knee. Tears are often suspected on physical exam by your orthopaedic surgeon and confirmed with an MRI. There are no specific ways to prevent meniscal tears. In the pediatric population, these are most often treated with arthroscopic surgery to either debride or repair the tear.
