Dear Doctor

April 2018

Question:

What advice would you give to a mother that recently had her 20 week sonogram and they show a deformity in the baby’s leg?

- Kyora - Virgin Islands (Parent)

Answer:

I would like to offer some reassurance. While it can be very frightening and upsetting to receive this type of news on a sonogram, there are many treatment options available and most children with limb deformities/differences do very well and are able to do lots of activities and sports. I would suggest that you reach out to someone in your area who treats these children and see if you can do a pre-natal appointment. Often parents find this very reassuring as the doctor can help them prepare and know what to expect.

You can find a pediatric orthopaedist (doctor who specializes in treating kids' bones and joints) here.
