Dear Doctor

March 2016

Question:

Good morning, I have a 6 year old little girl that for the past two months has complained of ankle pain, every time she runs the near right lateral malleolus ligament gets swollen. It only happens when she runs or jumps in place. She got referred to an orthopedic. They didn't do much but look at her foot, do some exercise in place so they dismissed her because she didn't hurt. The problem is she hurts only when she runs or jumps. Any insight is appreciated. Thank you.

Answer:

It may be helpful to have your child examined by an orthopaedist who specializes in pediatric patients. On the OrthoKids website there is a directory under "Find a Pediatric Orthopaedist".

From there you can find a list of POSNA members in your area. Active POSNA members are orthopaedic surgeons who are board certified in orthopaedic surgery and spend at least 75% of their time treating children with orthopaedic problems. This is a great way to look for a specialist for your child!
