Dear Doctor

May 2016

Question:

I have a 12 year daughter who has Stickler Syndrome and was just diagnosed with a bulging disk. I'm wondering what the treatment should be in general.

Answer:

The most common place for these to occur is in the lumbar or lower part of the spine. The initial treatment is physical therapy and activity modification. If the patient has pain that goes down her leg and this is not resolved after physical therapy, surgery may be considered. In general, surgery in not indicated if there is only back pain.
