Dear Doctor

February 2020

Question:

I have a three year old daughter. She has developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), minor left leg limping but is having no pain. Is it ok to do surgery at this stage or can it be left untreated? What is the best option?

Answer:

It is definitely safe to do surgery at this point, and it should be done as soon as possible for best results. I would not recommend leaving it as it is unilateral and best treated with an open reduction. It may need a small femoral shortening to safely get the femoral head into the socket.
